The situation of violence in Haiti has become untenable, with more than 5,000 deaths recorded so far in 2024, according to statements by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
During a recent press conference in Geneva, Türk highlighted that last weekend there was a devastating attack on the Cité Soleil district of Port-au-Prince, where at least 184 people lost their lives at the hands of a gang led by Micanor Altes, known as “Wa Mikanò.”
The situation reflects not only the brutality of the gangs that dominate much of Haitian territory but also a cycle of violence fueled by cultural beliefs and community conflicts.

The situation is further aggravated by the country’s political instability; since the resignation of President Ariel Henry in 2021, the transitional council has fallen into disrepute due to corruption allegations.
